Manaslu Trekking Region, Nepal – The Wild Circuit Around the World’s 8th Highest Peak
Manaslu trekking region is not the next Annapurna. It is what Annapurna used to be 30 years ago: a remote, restricted circuit of Tibetan villages, high passes, and deep gorges with no roads, no crowds, and real wilderness. Centered on Mt. Manaslu (8,163m), the world’s eighth-highest mountain, the region sits in north-central Nepal, bordering Tibet, and is protected as the Manaslu Conservation Area.
If you want authentic Himalayan culture without the tea-house traffic jams, this is where you come.
Why Trek Manaslu?
- Uncrowded alternative: The circuit is less crowded than Annapurna or Everest and features traditional Tibetan villages and monasteries.
- Big mountain drama: You circle Manaslu (8,163m) and see Himlung Himal (7,126m), with the high point at Larkya La Pass around 5,106m to 5,135m.
- Cultural depth: The region’s cultural richness is evident through Gurung and Bhutia communities, flat-roofed stone houses, Buddhist monasteries, and nomadic herding practices in remote areas.
- True wilderness: The Manaslu Conservation Area bordering Tibet is home to a diverse ecosystem with snow leopards, Himalayan black bear, grey wolf, lynx, and over 110 bird species.
Top Treks in the Manaslu Region
1. Manaslu Circuit Trek (Classic)
- Duration: 14 to 16 days, spanning about 177 km
- Grade: Moderate to challenging
- Route: Soti Khola – Machha Khola – Jagat – Deng – Namrung – Samagaon – Samdo – Larkya La – Bimthang – Dharapani
- Highlight: Crossing Larkya La at dawn with a 360° wall of Himalayan giants
It requires permits and a licensed guide and is best suited for trekkers seeking tranquility and natural beauty.
2. Manaslu Circuit + Tsum Valley
- Duration: 19 to 21 days
- Why add it: Tsum Valley is a sacred Tibetan Buddhist retreat once completely isolated. You visit Mu Gompa, Chhokang Paro, and ancient meditation caves. The Tsum Valley Trek and Larkya-La pass are the two prominent trekking sites showcasing the natural beauty of Manaslu.
- Culture: Pure Tibetan dialects, mani walls, and non-violence traditions where hunting is still forbidden
3. Shorter Manaslu Options
- Lower Manaslu Cultural Trek (8-10 days): Villages up to Namrung, no pass crossing
- Larkya La side trip from Samdo: For acclimatization and views without the full circuit
Best Time to Visit
Primary windows: Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November)
- Spring: Blooming rhododendrons and clear skies, warmer days at altitude. Best for photography and longer daylight.
- Autumn: Stable weather, safe high-altitude routes and festival views. Post-monsoon air is clearest in October.
- Shoulder: Early December and late February are possible for experienced trekkers, but cold.
Avoid: Monsoon (June-August) due to landslides and leeches, and deep winter when snow can block Larkya La Pass. The Nepal Tourism Board also lists March-May or September-November as best.
Permits and Rules (2026)
Manaslu is a restricted area. You cannot trek solo.
You need three permits:
- Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP)
- Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)
- Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) – for the exit via Dharapani
Group trekkers need a special permit along with the Manaslu Conservation Area permit, and a registered guide is mandatory. Minimum group size is two trekkers plus a guide (we can pair you).
What to Expect on the Trail
Terrain: Trekking in the Manaslu region offers an adventurous experience with challenging terrain and numerous hidden trails waiting to be explored. You start in a subtropical forest at 700m, climb through the deep Budhi Gandaki gorge, then enter the arid Tibetan plateau above 3,500m.
Accommodation: Basic teahouses are available in the Manaslu Conservation Area. Expect simple rooms, dal bhat, Tibetan bread, and yak butter tea. Hot showers and WiFi in Samagaon and Namrung, limited higher up.
Altitude: Good health and physical fitness are essential for multi-day treks, and acclimatization breaks may be necessary at certain points. We build in two acclimatization days at Samagaon (side hike to Manaslu Base Camp or Pungyen Gompa) and Samdo.
Culture: Nubri and Tsum people practice Tibetan Buddhism. You will spin prayer wheels, visit 700-year-old monasteries, and see flat-roofed villages built to withstand winter snow.

FAQs
Is Manaslu harder than the Annapurna Circuit?
Yes, slightly. The trail is rougher, days are longer, and Larkya La is higher and more remote than Thorong La. But teahouses make it accessible for fit beginners with a guide.
Do I need a porter?
Not mandatory but recommended. It protects your knees and supports local employment.
Can I do Manaslu in 10 days?
Physically possible but risky for altitude. We recommend 14-16 days for safe acclimatization.
Is Tsum Valley worth the extra days?
If you love culture over passes, absolutely. It is the most intact Tibetan Buddhist valley in Nepal.
